Applications open for national FM licence for additional services

Applications for a national FM licence that will run from March 2022 until April 2031 have been opened by Ofcom for operators looking to operate additional services.

The current licence, operated by INRIX UK Ltd, is due to expire at the end of February 2022. It is currently used to transmit traffic and road travel information to in-car navigation devices using spare capacity from the frequencies used to broadcast Classic FM.

Ofcom's intention is to renew this licence so that it will now expire at the same time as the current Classic FM licence.

The closing date for applications is 3pm on Wednesday 12th January 2022.
