Radio Lollipop Newcastle has been recognised with The King's Award for Voluntary Service — the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary organisations — in acknowledgement of its decades of work supporting children in hospital.
The award was presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Ms Lucy Winskell OBE, and marks more than 40 years of service since the station was founded on 14 July 1982 — making it the third Radio Lollipop station established in the UK.
Over those four decades, the station's volunteers have visited thousands of children and families at the Great North Children's Hospital.
Volunteer Kate Horsey described the presentation as a special day, adding that the team is incredibly grateful for the recognition of the difference they make to children in hospital.
